If you are new to Imperial College, this page brings together some of the benefits that you may be interested in as you join us.
We offer you a competitive salary, package of attractive terms and conditions of service and access to excellent occupational pension benefits, which after salary is arguably the most valuable benefit for us all. We also offer you a great range of optional benefits which we hope you will take advantage of.
Although this page will give you a flavour of your benefits as a new member of staff, along with some suggestions for ways you can engage socially with other staff to help integrate yourself into our community, we encourage you to view the other benefits available.
Financial benefits and discounts
As you embark on your career with us your future retirement might be the last thing on your mind, but giving consideration to your pension provision now will benefit you greatly when you do retire. The College offers three contributory pension schemes to its eligible staff:
- Superannuation Arrangements for the University of London – SAUL
- University Superannuation Scheme – USS
- National Health Service – NHSPS
For each of these schemes the College also contributes a percentage of your pensionable pay in order to guarantee your benefits. In addition to this benefit, joining one of the pension schemes will give you immediate life cover, an inflation-proofed pension and long-term illness cover.
The cost to you is not as much as you might think and with the option, for those joining USS or SAUL, to contribute via PensionSMART, our salary sacrifice scheme, both you and the College make savings in the amount of National Insurance contributions paid. As your salary will be reduced by the amount of your pension contribution, you will pay lower National Insurance contributions than you would otherwise and your take home pay will be slightly higher as a result.
Whether you are considering joining a scheme or are already a member, our pension webpages will provide you with scheme information, answers to your queries and direct you to further sources of information.

"I find the season ticket loan really helpful. It saves me money over the year and means I can also get an annual gold railcard for free, which saves me more on my train journeys even when I’m not commuting." Anthony Wilkinson, Office of the Provost.
