BWR Research Hub and Network
Founded in 2016, the BWR Research Hub and Network has been established to promote Boiling Water Reactor technology among academic, industrial and local communities and participate in the creation of the next generation of these reactors. Globally, BWRs are the second most common reactor type used for nuclear electricity generation; however the UK has relatively little indigenous experience of their operation.
The BWR Hub is a joint venture set up by Bangor University and Imperial College with support from Hitachi-GE Nuclear and the Welsh Government. The Horizon Nuclear Power Wylfa Newydd project plans to deplot Hitachi GE Advanced BWRs on the Isle of Anglesey with subsequent units intended at Oldbury in south Gloucestershire. On their completion, BWRs will represent a considerable portion of UK electricity generating capacity.
The Centre for Nuclear Engineering's involvement is to leverage its network and experience to assist Bangor University in promoting academic research, industrial partnership and public outreach in current and future BWR technologies.
