The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) was founded at Imperial College in 1948.

Today IAESTE has over 85 member countries worldwide and has exchanged over 320k students. The scheme is administered in the UK by the British Council as IAESTE UK.

IAESTE provide opportunities for undergraduate students to undertake an internship while gaining valuable international experience.

  • To provide course related overseas training
  • To provide skills and experience to compete in the international job market
  • To be a source of cultural enrichment for trainees and their host communities

Key facts

 Eligibility

Students of any nationality are welcome to apply. However, if you are on a Tier 4 visa, you will need to submit additional documentation.

Open to students in the second year of your undergraduate degree or above, including any year of your MSc or PhD.

Must be studying a relevant subject : science, engineering but not medicine 

 Duration

 Normally 6-12 weeks during the summer

Funding 

All IAESTE trainees are paid local salary (to meet local needs) applicants pay a £10 fee (refunded if not nominated to a placement)

Participants are responsible for travel fare, travel insurance and any necessary visa/vaccination costs

Eligibility and Selection

Preference is given to students from departments at Imperial who normally host trainees (i.e. departments who are planning to host a visiting IAESTE trainee in 2016).

The departments hosting in 2017/18 have not been confirmed yet but in 2018 they included Physics, Materials, EEE and Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Advises on visas and work permits and organises a pre-departure day

Accommodation is organised by the host Employer & the local IAESTE Association

The host country IAESTE Association organises a social programme

Where can I go?

Placements are available in 80+ countries. A list of available placements for summer 2019 will be distributed to shortlisted candidates
