International student support

As a student in London, you'll be welcomed into a city where over 300 languages are spoken and where over 100,000 students from 200 countries come to study each year.

Imperial is the most international university in the UK, and the fifth most international in the world. Our International Student Support team offers a range of dedicated support for overseas students, including an international welcome event for new students and a year-round social programme.

They can also provide information on a range of relevant issues, such as opening a bank account in the UK and accessing the National Health Service.

English language support

Our Centre for Academic English offers a three-week pre-sessional English course for students who have met our English language requirements, but wish to further develop their academic language and literacy before starting their course.

The Centre also provides free English language support throughout your time here. This includes courses and workshops on academic writing, presentations, social English and academic listening, as well as one-to-one consultations and online resources.

Visa advice

We offer specialist immigration advice, including on Tier 4 (general) student visas, before you arrive and throughout your studies. One-year Master’s students can access a streamlined visa process and may stay in the UK for six months after their studies.

National Service

If you need to complete National Service and you apply to Imperial two years before you are due to complete this, you should initially apply for deferred entry.

If your place is confirmed within the UCAS cycle in which you apply, you can then contact the relevant Admissions team the next September to request another deferment of your place to the following year (i.e. the year you are due to complete your National Service).

We try to accommodate all deferment requests but these are subject to approval.

Multi-faith provision

There is a student-run Islamic prayer room on campus with separate male and female areas available. Three multi-faith prayer rooms are also available in the Chaplaincy Multi-Faith Centre for use by all faith groups.

All university accommodation is self-catered. Halal and vegetarian options are also available in catering outlets on campus.

"The diversity amongst the student body at Imperial has really opened my eyes to the world. I never before had the opportunity to interact with people of so many different cultures. Everyone has differing opinions and practices, which is great for creating innovative ideas. Receiving a President’s Scholarship from Imperial really helped me to buy all the essentials that were required for me to settle in another country."

Wan Wei Ang (Malaysia), President's Undergraduate Scholar, MBBS/BSc Medicine
