Call for Feasibility Studies
The Centre for Systems Engineering and Innovation (CSEI) hosts a workshop on Wednesday 30 January 2019, to explore systems approaches and systems engineering and to help shape feasibility studies for its 2019 ‘small call.’ CSEI acts as a hub for inter-disciplinary research across campus on systems engineering and innovation as applied to infrastructure systems (including water, energy, transport and buildings). Hosted in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, it aims to transform the delivery of infrastructure through world-class research on systems engineering and innovation. Please see the Centre website http://www.imperial.ac.uk/csei for further details of the Centre.
The CSEI 2019 ‘Small Call’
The call will seed-fund feasibility studies (£5-10k) to initiate and support research related to systems engineering and innovation in infrastructure. Each seed-funded project will have a mentor from the Centre and the successful applicants will present the outputs of their research at the CSEI Annual Research Showcase.
We encourage research that uses a systems engineering framework. Proposals are encouraged on (but not limited to) the following themes and topics:
- Early stage set-up of projects from a systems engineering perspective.
- Infrastructure systems resilience, safety and/or robustness.
- Mapping production systems.
- Infrastructure as involving cyber-physical systems.
- Interconnections between operations and design, e.g. impact of standardisation.
- Projects as interventions in infrastructure systems of systems.
Proposal submissions are limited to Imperial College staff and students and will be through a 1-page form (see below – ‘how to apply?’), with a deadline of Wednesday 13 February 2019, decisions will be made by Wednesday 27 February 2019.
The CSEI Workshop
Potential applicants are invited to attend the CSEI workshop Wednesday 30 January 2019, 10.00 – 12.00. The workshop will explore systems approaches and systems engineering and help shape feasibility studies to CSEI vision and aims and industry priorities.
It is possible to attend the CSEI workshop without submitting to the call (and vice versa) but in the 2019 small call, we will favour proposals that are developed in collaboration with industry through this workshop, which will involve selected industrial collaborators.
How are projects chosen?
Proposals will be ranked in relation to their scope/objectives, fit with the vision and aims of the Centre, methods/work-plan, potential industry impact, added value, overall costs and follow-on plans. Submitted proposals will be considered by a Technical Advisory Committee comprised of Centre advisory partners and academics. Final decisions will be taken by the Director in consultation with theme leaders.
How to apply?
The proposal template/headings are below. Submission is by email to firstname.lastname@example.org before 16.00 on Wednesday 13 February and the proposal should fit on ONE page of A4 (calibri 11 font)
